Don’t Be A Jerkoff

Affiliate/Online marketing is an interesting industry.  A lot of the players are younger guys & girls with very little business experience.  Being young I think that the language and attitude of a lot of people you’ll meet in this industry are different then other places of business.  There’s also a lot of joking around, partying and a friendly nature between different business associates.  Take the affiliate/affiliate manager relationship.  A lot of affiliates are very friendly with their affiliate managers and vice versa.  What I find obnoxious, is when people don’t know the difference between joking around and wasting my time when I’m talking serious business.  Here are 2 examples:

Affiliate: Hey man, I’m looking for an auto insurance lead gen offer that accepts social traffic.
Affiliate Manager: Better Get Geico
Affiliate: haha, seriously
Affiliate Manager: I got one so easy a caveman could do it.
Affiliate: ok what is it?
Affiliate Manager: Did you know 15 minutes could save you 15%?
Affiliate: OK, im going to go ask another network because your a jerkoff.

Or This example:

Yesterday I saw an ex-affiliate manager of a certain network say they were looking for a job.  I have some connections to get people jobs as affiliate managers.  I sent her a message

Me: How good of an affiliate manager are you? Do you have a lot of really big affiliates? I may know of a company looking for AMs – Lemme know
Her: Im an awesome affiliate manager of course 🙂 What company are you referring to? Thanks!!
Me: Do you have a big book of business?
Her: These fuckers know me all over the world!

Uhhh, ok.  With a response like that, she’s the last person I’d recommend for a job.

Joking around is fine and fun but know the difference between when someone is talking serious business vs. just killing time.

  1. oh wow. I know exactly what you mean, and it is very much a plague on our industry. I have to say though, it is a very quick way to discover the best people to work with 🙂 It shortens the research process by quite a bit. If someone can’t even figure out when another person is joking or serious, then they are most likely going to be a liability in the future.

Her: These fuckers know me all over the world!

    LOL

  3. Well said.
These are poor examples of affiliate managers, and unfortunately, it’s all too common.
    I wonder why she’s out of a job? Hhmmm…

  4. Frank Frank

To be frank, I feel you’re being a bit over-sensitive here.

Love/hate it… formal communication etiquette is not an established protocol within affiliate marketing.

Some people would rather take it that way, some don’t. As an affiliate manager it’s not going to always work out perfectly. As an affiliate… one should be able to anticipate that not every AM will instantly recognize their intention.

    It’s peoples work, after all.

  6. Yaxxx Yaxxx

lol frank, over-sensitive? I don’t think so. The guy wanted an offer and the AM was a douche.

all good shooting the shit with your AM but when its blatant the conversation is gonna be business, stick to business.

  7. Jojo Jojo

this is why some of my ams get wake up calls and pizzas at odd times 🙂

  8. OMG this was funny and sad all at the same time lol. Great post. Hustler you can be very serious and still knock me out with these TRUTHS

  9. cousinvinnie cousinvinnie

Ya just gotta love this business, one day Networks will wake up.

  10. What’s worse is when they get downright rude to you and laugh at something you’ve said, but you meant it seriously. People like that instantly lose respect with me and makes me feel I’m dealing with the wrong network as a whole.

  11. vlad vlad

Just get a new AM. When you ask them a serious question… they shouldn’t dick around. Its ok to make jokes randomly… but not when you are asking a business question. Just post on wickedfire and get them fired. Fucken retards should work at McDonalds.

  12. you call people retarded online. you are a real fu**er. you represent spammy junk that nobody wants. fu** you and your industry. you are a real junior level bottom feeder scum bag. i bet you have so many enemies you don’t know who this. you your mom, are all retards. best part. you breed more you fuc*ers. your kids will breed your stupidity. haha!! you will have to answer to GOD to dumbass. i await your demise.

wow that last post was pretty classy. i really like the “you your mom are retards”. other than that comment, pretty good post – i wish more networks trained their affiliate managers to talk business and be professional because even though it’s a relaxed industry, we are all here to make money.

  14. I guess it all depends on your relationship with them too, to some people business is business, others like to have fun with it..

  15. Thank you for the smile Adhustler! As an AM, you deal with a variety of affiliates who are all of a different character. I learn real quick if its business to business or personal. Some like the banter and some don’t..it makes for an interesting day. At ASW, I met some really genuine AMs so at least there are a few networks that get the point. Lastly, it was good seeing you again!
