Affiliate Summit West 2011 Day 2 & 3 Observations

On tuesday night of Affiliate Summit Myself, Ian Fernando, Jonathan Volk, Jim Banks & DK were sitting around having a lot of laughs at the Parasol Bar at The Wynn.  DK pulled up my observations post from day 1 (since he’d never read AdHustler.com before) and laughed hard.  I mean really hard.  We decided to as a group come up with some observations about Affiliate Summit.  Some are mine, some are DKs, some are the groups.  Here they are:

  • Even if you don’t have business cards you can still win 1000 in a business card drawing. (It Happened)
  • If you are at an affiliate conference to market your network, don’t have a line of people, waiting to speak to you about the money you haven’t paid them.
  • If you are going to have babes working in your booth, make sure they at least know what affiliate marketing is.
  • If you are trying to impress a girl, don’t tell them “I have been with the same girl since I was 14 so I have had time to practice being “the creepy guy”. (Actual comment overheard).
  • The Wynn and Encore are such a labyrinth that Jason Rubaky, covered in tattoos was seen riding a hover round (old people scooter) around the hotels and parking it in his room.
  • If you want to want to lose money at a bar or make everyone at a party uncomfortable, invite DK and Ad Hustler and have them talk about how they don’t drink, smoke or take drugs.
  • Don’t think that just because you spent $2000 for your hotel room for the week that you can use your cell phone without holding it against the window.
  • While someone is peeing is not the appropriate time to introduce ones self.
  • Shoemoney knows how to draw a crowd to a product launch.  He had Rob Hustle with Dancers introduce the session
  • There is a huge difference between a good session & a bad one.  Not all sessions work, not all speakers are good
  • I like people who can see the comedy in themselves – don’t take yourself too seriously
  • Don’t ever ask someone how much they make.  If you do, you deserve your head dunked in the toilet
  • Whether you are “big” in internet marketing or “small” be nice to everyone.  Small fish become big fish and big fish fall.  Make friends, not enemies.  Treat people with respect unless they prove they deserve otherwise
  • Don’t talk to someone when they are on the phone
  • I had the undying need to write my name in the blue pads in the Wynn urinals every time I peed.

What can you add?

    “Urinal Graffiti” – nice. =)

Totally don’t introduce yourself while pissing…

  4. Good times! Enjoyed hanging with you! I enjoyed making the urinal designs as well. lol

    More observations:
    – Pawn stars salesmen are nothing like the guys you see on the show.
    – $50 for a $2 bill is almost always a negative ROI.
    – There is a shortage of Caesar salad at pizza restaurants.
    – VIP means nothing (hello line).

  5. This is a great observation:

“Whether you are “big” in internet marketing or “small” be nice to everyone. Small fish become big fish and big fish fall. Make friends, not enemies. Treat people with respect unless they prove they deserve otherwise.”

    I’d also include:
    – Trolls exist everywhere, even in real life. Turbolapp and I were trolled by some Australian guy early Monday morning who was trying to convince us Bing was the new big thing.
    – Milkshakes are the best cure ever for a hangover.
    – The really hyped up parties for Monday night turned out to be duds. Impromptu table service at the Marquee, however, turned out to be where everyone ended up.
    – The longer you’re in this industry (provided you don’t make it your mission in life to piss people off) the better it gets.

  6. As to the pee graffiti thing. When you told me about it, I thought I knew what you meant. But next time I went into the urinal I was like……nice…….

Really fing funny that we never met each other before Tuesday night. Way, way, way funny times!

  7. > Don’t talk to someone when they are on the phone

I had this going on twice – people were shadowing me, getting in my face and trying to talk to me. When I got off the phone, it wasn’t anything important either time – just wrong.

  8. Love the one about not talking to someone while they are on the phone. That happened to me multiple times during the show.

At lunch one day we came up with the business idea of running a rent-a-scooter or scooter-taxi service during the show. Kudos to Jason Rubacky for getting his own scooter.

  9. Hahah, I wrote my name in the blue urinal pads every time too!

  10. >>Whether you are “big” in internet marketing or “small” be nice to everyone. Small fish become big fish and big fish fall. Make friends, not enemies. Treat people with respect unless they prove they deserve otherwise

I really like this one. Too many people treat too many others like DBs. There are some awesome people in this industry that very few people know because they won’t take the time to talk to them.

  11. […] are a TON of other recap posts you can check out about […]

  12. Observations:

-Apparently, don’t miss any session that has Ad Hustle involved.

-More people should have been at the keynote with Drew Eric Whitman.

-Jonathan Volk and I suck at Blackjack.

-The In N Out Burgers that DK brought us at his tournament were worth the money I lost while playing.

I’m glad we were all on the same page 🙂
